What is a construction punch list and how does Workhand track it?
A punch list is the running list of items that need to be fixed, finished, or verified before a job closes out. In Workhand each punch item is a row on the job's Punch tab. It has a description, an open or done status, an assigned team member, a creator, and a created-at timestamp. Attach photos to any item so the fix is unambiguous. When work is verified, mark done. When every item is done, you are ready for final walkthrough.
Can I assign punch items to a specific team member?
Yes. Every punch item has an assigned-to field. Pick from your team roster. That person owns the fix and sees the item on their side of the job. The Owner or Admin can reassign at any time as scope shifts. This turns a scrolling list of open issues into ten small individual to-dos with clear ownership.
Can subcontractors see the punch list?
No. Subs cannot see punch items. Job closeout is not something a sub runs, so exposing internal punch would just create friction with a party that has no authority to change the state. When a sub needs to fix something, the PM assigns them the specific task through chat, notes, or a change order. The punch view itself stays with Owner, Admin, Employee (PM), and Sales role users.
Do punch items work offline?
Punch item creation and status toggles rely on the live job data, so a signal is preferred for the punch tab itself. That said, the photo you attach to a punch item goes through the offline-first photo capture, so you can snap the shot in a dead zone and it uploads on reconnect. The typical field flow is walk the job with the phone, note the issues verbally or in chat, then create the punch items at the truck with signal.
What happens to the punch list after I close the job?
It stays. Closing a job in Workhand does not delete history. Punch items, daily logs, chat, receipts, and photos all remain on the record. Six months later when the homeowner calls for a warranty issue, you open the closed job, look at the punch history, and see whether the issue in question was already noted and fixed. That is the warranty callback reference in one place.
How is Workhand punch list different from a spreadsheet or a text thread?
Spreadsheets do not scroll well on a phone, do not tie to jobs, and do not carry photos. Text threads scroll into oblivion after the third day. Can I attach photos to a punch item?
Yes. Photos attach to punch items the same way they attach to daily logs. Snap the crack in the plaster, circle it with the annotation tool, save it to the punch item. The person assigned to the fix opens the item, sees the exact location, and does not have to guess what you meant. When the fix is verified, the before photo stays on the record next to the closed status.
